Can hydrangeas survive full sun?

Dr. Mallow,

I noticed my neighbors with hydrangeas in full sun, but when I planted mine in full sun it didn't even last a week! What am I doing wrong, and why are their hydrangeas lasting and not mine?! Please help.

Hello, your neighbor more than likely had one of the sun tolerant hydrangea varieties. Most hydrangeas tend to like to receive shading from afternoon sun. However, varieties such as Limelight, Pinky Winky, QuickFire, Firelight, and Endless Summer have been bred for features such as drought tolerance, and ability to take on direct sun for longer times. Although, some of these varieties are drought tolerant, they will perform at their best when well watered.
